Talen Energy Buys Three New Powerplants
Talen Energy charged up it's natural gas fleet in a big way today. On January 15, 2026, the company announced a $3.45 billion deal to acquire three new powerplants, equaling roughly 2.6 gigawatts of natural-gas capacity. Talen purchased the plants from Energy Capital Partners (ECP), and included the Waterford Energy Center and Darby Generating Station in Ohio, as well as the Lawrenceburg Power Plant in Indiana. The consideration is about $2.55B in cash plus about $900M in Talen stock. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
Talen said the deal is immediately accretive, and management expects it to be more than 15% accretive to adjusted free cash flow per share annually through 2030. The acquisition would roughly double Talen’s expected annual generation output within two years. Energy demands are rising throughout the PJM area, and when management releases a statement that mentions 85% of the revenue generated by the new power plants is expected to be converted into free cash flow - it's because they know doubling up on what you do best usually pays off. Talen is pitching this in a region where the demand story has gotten… let’s call it energetic. Talen framed the Ohio assets as enhancing its ability to serve the rapidly growing data-center market. Data centers need electricity two ways - lots of it and constantly. An uninterrupted power supply is one of those critical elements of data centers that is especially tricky to work out. Talen knows this and the company is actively expanding its portfolio to attract large commercial customers who need to buy reliable electricity wholesale. Talen shares jumped after the announcement, trading up by about 9%. When a company says it's going to spend $3.45 billion and the share price increases - that's saying something. This acquisition is expected to significantly boost Talen's generation capacity, its cash flow, and market presence - and Wall Street is all over it. SPONSORED CONTENT
