Tesla Gives Investors More Cars Than Comfort

Tesla, Inc.

Tesla's latest quarter delivered the cars and beat the estimates, but ultimately could not outrun its own valuation. The company delivered 480,126 vehicles in the second quarter, up about 25% from a year earlier and well ahead of analyst expectations, while production totaled 451,758 vehicles. Tesla also deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage products. Shares closed down 7.5% Thursday at $393.32, as investors looked at the blowout delivery number and figured the stock had already charged long enough.

The good news is that Tesla still knows how to move cars. The problem was the high bar the company has built for itself. Tesla’s core auto business looked stronger than it has in recent quarters. Demand abroad picked up, refreshed Model Y momentum helped, and deliveries ran more than 28,000 vehicles ahead of production. That helped shrink inventory instead of adding to it, but Tesla’s stock is being judged against a much bigger promise than quarterly vehicle sales.

That is the awkward part of being Tesla — the stock is carrying a technology-company burden and good news is no longer enough by itself. Investors are also paying for autonomous driving, robotaxis, AI infrastructure, energy storage, and whatever version of Elon Musk’s future arrives next. Tesla can beat the car number and still leave shareholders asking what it means for margins, pricing, cash flow, and the much bigger technology promises baked into the stock.

The next test comes July 22, when Tesla reports full quarterly results. That is when investors will find out whether the delivery surge came with healthy economics or was powered by too much discounting. Demand looked better, but the stock still ran into the same valuation wall — Tesla has to answer for everything else investors are paying for.
