Micron Builds Out DRAM And HBM Capacity In Taiwan
Micron added a new piece to its manufacturing footprint Monday, completing a Taiwan site acquisition tied to future DRAM and HBM growth. The company said it has assumed ownership of PSMC’s P5 site in Tongluo, Miaoli County, Taiwan, under the agreement it first announced on January 17. That turns the $1.8 billion deal into an actual asset, and while it won't create shipments overnight, it does give Micron’s DRAM and HBM ambitions a much more tangible foundation.
The company said Tongluo will complement its operations as an extension of its vertically integrated mega campus in Taichung, about 15 miles away, and it comes with roughly 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space. Micron also said the facility will support its push to expand supply of leading-edge DRAM products, including HBM, to meet growing AI-driven demand. The added space is being tied to memory categories that already carry strategic and commercial weight, with Micron saying it has already completed agreements on price and volume for its entire calendar 2026 HBM supply. The company said it began preparations for the Tongluo site after the January announcement and will begin retrofitting the existing cleanroom now that the transaction has closed. Micron expects meaningful product shipments from the existing fab beginning in fiscal 2028, which gives investors a real timeline to track instead of the usual corporate fog machine. Even better, management is already planning the next phase, with construction set to begin by the end of fiscal 2026 on a second facility of comparable scale. That second facility is expected to add about 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space to the property, making clear the Tongluo site is part of a broader manufacturing push tied to AI-era memory demand. While the announcement alone wont finish the job, it does give Micron’s DRAM and HBM expansion a larger industrial base and a clearer path forward. Micron is still going to have to execute, equip, and ramp the site in phases, and semiconductor expansions never come with a guarantee and a ribbon. SPONSORED CONTENT
