Vertex Moves Closer To A New Kidney Franchise
Monday evening, Vertex gave investors a late-stage readout that looked commercially relevant from the start. The company said povetacicept met the primary endpoint in the Phase 3 RAINIER trial in adults with IgA nephropathy, with patients showing a 52.0% reduction in proteinuria after 36 weeks versus a 4.3% decline for placebo. For a company still closely identified with cystic fibrosis, the result added to the case that Vertex is building something broader than a single-franchise story. Shares rose about 7% in extended trading after the announcement.
The top-line win mattered, but the supporting data helped make the case feel more durable. Vertex said povetacicept also reduced levels of a harmful antibody by about 79.3% and led to hematuria clearance in more than 85% of patients compared with placebo, while the once-every-four-weeks injection was generally safe and well tolerated. The interim analysis included 199 patients, and the full 605-patient trial will continue for two years to measure whether the drug can slow long-term kidney function loss. Vertex has not finished the race, but it may have already convinced investors that this was not just an expensive science project acquired for decoration. That is what makes the next step matter so much. Vertex said it plans to complete its FDA application by the end of March and use a priority review voucher to cut the standard review time to six months from 10 months. If that timeline holds, the market will get an answer relatively quickly on whether Vertex can turn its 2024 Alpine Immune Sciences acquisition into the foundation of a real kidney franchise. The kidney function data will take time, but this already looks like the kind of update that can broaden how investors think about Vertex. SPONSORED CONTENT
