AbbVie Strengthens US Manufacturing
AbbVie just announced it signed a definitive agreement to acquire a drug-delivery device manufacturing facility in Tempe, Arizona, plus associated intellectual property, from West Pharmaceutical Services. On 1/12/26, Abbvie presented the acquisition as a meaningful expansion of its drug-delivery device manufacturing capabilities and capacity. This follows similar construction projects in the North Chicago and Worcester, Massachusetts areas. On October 16th of last year, Abbvie disclosed plans to spend $10 billion over the next decade, and the Tempe site is the latest part of their larger commitment to invest in U.S manufacturing.
The numbers were not subtle. AbbVie said it plans to hire approximately 200 employees at the site and invest more than $175 million to acquire the facility, modernize it, and fully integrate it into AbbVie’s global manufacturing network. AbbVie also noted it already has a broad U.S. footprint — about 29,000 U.S. employees, including more than 6,000 across 11 U.S. manufacturing sites — and said the Arizona deal would expand its presence and economic impact in the state. Strategically, AbbVie said the transaction supports production of current and next-generation immunology and neuroscience medicines, and that it includes the transfer of manufacturing facilities, including multiple production lines. Abbvie plans to use the Tempe location, among other things, for increasing production of their next gen, 3.5 mL on-body injector technology. AbbVie said the transaction is anticipated to close in mid-2026, subject to closing conditions. Until then, investors can file this under more "supply-chain insurance" and Abbvie just following through on their 10-year-plan. While product breakthroughs are what usually get the spotlight, it’s the manufacturing and delivery systems that make sure those breakthroughs actually show up — preferably on time and in volume.
