Smartbird Flies Into AI Without Shoes

Allbirds has officially changed its feathers, and Wall Street seems much more interested in GPUs than wool sneakers. The former footwear company changed its name to Smartbird, completed the sale of the Allbirds brand and footwear assets, and appointed AI infrastructure veteran Nadia Carlsten as chief executive. Shares rose about 39% Wednesday, as investors were fascinated by one of the strangest pivots of the AI boom.

The new company has traded laces for latency. Smartbird is pitching dedicated AI infrastructure as a managed service, giving enterprises access to private AI clusters without requiring them to buy, operate, or refresh the hardware themselves. That sounds a lot more exciting than a struggling sneaker brand, especially with AI computing demand still pulling capital into anything connected to chips, data centers, and cloud capacity. The company also doubled its convertible financing facility to $100 million from $50 million, giving it more cash for a market where even a former sneaker company can get a second look if it says “AI” loudly enough.

The problem is that Smartbird still has to prove it is more than an AI label stitched onto a public-company shell. The company said it is in active discussions with prospective customers and is designing its first cluster deployments, which means the business is still much closer to a pitch deck than a scaled operating model. Carlsten brings real AI and advanced-computing experience, but Smartbird is entering a crowded field where customers, capital, equipment access, and execution all matter. For now, investors are cheering the new direction, but the next test is whether this bird can actually fly now that it ditched the shoes.
