Century Aluminum Joins The Made In USA Revival
Century Aluminum just signed up for a project that highlights the revival of American manufacturing to a 'T'. On January 26, 2026, the company announced it will take a 40% stake in Emirates Global Aluminium’s (EGA) planned primary aluminum smelter in Inola, Oklahoma — a project the companies said would be the first primary aluminum plant built in the U.S. in almost 50 years. EGA will hold the other 60%, and while the partners didn’t disclose deal terms, EGA previously said it expected to invest around $4 billion in the project.
This headline isn’t just “new plant” - it’s the scale and strategic positioning. With Century involved, planned capacity was raised to 750,000 metric tons per year. That's up from the 600,000 previously anticipated, which the companies said would more than double U.S. output of primary aluminum. Construction is expected to start by year-end 2026, with production expected to begin closer to 2030. The U.S. has been lacking aluminum production-capacity for decades - and thanks to tariffs, that's all about to change. Tariffs on aluminum imports were doubled to 50%, driving the U.S. Midwest aluminum premium to record highs. The region currently pays an additional 99 cents per pound, or about $2,183 extra per ton - for foreign aluminum. Theoretically, once domestic production catches up there will be no reason to buy imported materials -- and American made aluminum can finally stand a chance of being sold at a competitive price. The companies pointed out that roughly 85% of U.S. aluminum demand is currently met by imports - so if this project executes, it’s not just “growth", it’s independence from foreign suppliers of a material that is critical to defense, auto, and construction supply chains. Century’s 40% stake can be seen as a solid bet that aluminum is about to get a lot more patriotic — and a lot less imported. SPONSORED CONTENT
