Alaska Air's Huge Boeing Order

Alaska Air Group, Inc.

Alaska Air Group came to Boeing’s checkout counter on January 7, 2026 with a cart so full it needed a boarding pass. The airline announced its largest aircraft order ever, committing to 110 Boeing jets — 105 are 737-10s plus five 787-10 Dreamliners. They also secured rights to acquire 35 more 737-10s within the time frame of this order. Alaska Air says this investment will help maintain a modern, fuel-efficient fleet while securing critical delivery slots through 2035.

Something interesting for investors to note is what these specific types of aircraft signal about Alaska Air's future ambitions. The 737-10s are geared toward dense routes and efficiency, while the 787-10s are meant to comfortably handle long-distance, international travel. The standing order, plus the rights to purchase 35 extra planes, is a clear sign of the airline's intentions to expand beyond its traditional footprint and push deeper into international flying. Alaska has said the purchase supports a longer-term growth trajectory, with plans to take the fleet from 413 aircraft to more than 550 by 2035.

Of course, more aircraft means more capacity to sell, and newer aircraft can improve unit economics over time. While this all sounds great, there is a reality check that bears mentioning. Boeing’s 737-10 certification timing remains an important variable - to put it mildly, the MAX 10 has had a rough start. The 737 MAX line faced dramatic headlines about quality control scandals for years, and Boeing is still working through certification and regulatory scrutiny from the FAA, so Alaska’s “growth runway” depends on deliveries arriving as planned. Boeing expects 737s to be certified sometime this year, with deliveries set to restart at the end of 2026 or early 2027, but who really knows? Still, Alaska is determined to build up their network — especially as it continues integrating Hawaiian Airlines operationally while keeping the brands distinct.

ALK just made a long-dated bet that demand will reward scale — and that Boeing will keep improving from "comeback tour" to "steady headliner". For shareholders, the fun part is the optionality of having 110 jets ordered now, plus those additional 35 737-10 rights. This gives Alaska flexibility to lean into growth if the routes (and returns) pencil out — because nothing says “disciplined expansion” like ordering planes with an add-to-cart button.
